A first can be a useful signpost and a poor summary. It can mean first in an institution, first to receive a particular qualification, or first to complete a precisely defined journey. It should never mean simply “the first woman to matter”.
State the boundary
Elizabeth Blackwell’s 1849 record concerns an MD from an American medical school. Amelia Earhart’s 1932 record concerns a nonstop, solo Atlantic flight by a woman. Neither statement should be enlarged beyond its evidence.
Not every milestone is a first
Merian’s 1705 book, Lovelace’s 1843 Notes, Curie’s shared 1903 prize and Leavitt’s 1912 work belong in a life record without being labelled universal firsts. Publication, discovery and recognition have different dates and different meanings.
The dated ledger
- 1705 · Maria Sibylla Merian. Publishes Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium, bringing insects and their habitats onto the same page. British Museum.
- 1843 · Ada Lovelace. Her translation and extensive Notes on the Analytical Engine appear in Scientific Memoirs. Science Museum.
- 1849 · Elizabeth Blackwell. Receives an MD from Geneva Medical College: the first woman to earn the degree from an American medical school. Harvard Medical School.
- 1903 · Marie Curie. Shares the Nobel Prize in Physics with Pierre Curie and Henri Becquerel. A milestone, not a solitary achievement. Nobel Prize.
- 1912 · Henrietta Swan Leavitt. Her work on 25 variable stars establishes the Cepheid period–luminosity relationship more firmly, following her 1908 observations. NASA.
- 1932 · Amelia Earhart. Becomes the first woman to fly nonstop and solo across the Atlantic, on 20–21 May. National Air and Space Museum.
- 1963 · Valentina Tereshkova. Becomes the first woman in space aboard Vostok 6, launched on 16 June. NASA.
Keep the rest of the life in view
A threshold crossed is rarely the work of a single instant. Look at the preparation before it, the collaborators beside it and the consequences after it. When the evidence is contested, a narrower claim is better than a grander headline.
